Proper brushing is probably the most important way to keep your mouth healthy and to ensure a perfect smile after treatment is completed! Brushing correctly and with the proper frequency can help you prevent problems before they appear. There are four important things you will need to properly brush your teeth: a toothbrush with soft bristles, toothpaste with fluoride, the correct angle of brushing, and brushing in a pattern. Use the following tips to help you get the most out of your brushing.
- It is important to brush after every meal including snacks.
- You should use a toothbrush with soft bristles. Soft bristles with rounded tips are gentler to your teeth and gums, and then also makes it easier to remove plaque between the gum line and brackets. Use about a pea-sized amount of toothpaste that contains fluoride.
- Angle the brush along the gum line and above the bracket at a 45-degree angle and apply firm pressure so that the bristles slide under the gum line. Repeat for the lower brackets by placing the brush under the bracket and towards the gum line. Don’t forget to brush the chewing surfaces of your teeth and the inside that touch your tongue!
- Brush in short back and forth strokes and in small circular motions. Focusing on each tooth to get all surfaces, angling the tip of your brush to get around the bracket.
- Floss daily with waxed floss and a floss threader. Start by inserting one end of the floss about five inches into the loop of the threader. Pass the floss threader under or over the metal wire. Remove the threader from the floss and floss gently back and forth and up and down into the gum line between the teeth. Repeat in between each tooth!
- Complete your routine by gently brushing your tongue and the roof of your mouth. This will remove germs that can cause bad breath.
- Don’t forget to visit your dentist every 6 months for your regular cleaning and exam!
