We all know Halloween means candy! And while it’s great to enjoy a yummy treat every now and then, we would also like to make your orthodontic treatment as quick, painless and enjoyable as possible.
What to avoid:
Certain candies can cause serious damage to your teeth and braces, which we know that broken brackets = delay in treatment time. Hard candies, chewy / sticky caramels and taffy, nutty goodies, bubble gum and tootsie rolls alike are all culprits that slip in between wires to pop brackets off and pull bands off, even those tiny Skittles. Furthermore, the sticky’s get, yup you guessed it, stuck between teeth and brackets then the sugar breaks down into an acid and causes tooth decay!
The good News!
These candies are your friends when it comes to after trick or treating treats; soft chocolates like Hersey Kisses, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Kit Kat bars, Three Musketeers, Sweet Tarts, Peppermint Patties and Hersey’s Cookies ‘n’ Creme bars are all good examples of the soft, melt in your mouth type candies that are safe for braces.
The Bottom Line:
Staying away from sticky and hard candies this Halloween is the name of the game. In addition to avoiding broken brackets and bent wires, we encourage you to brush and floss between teeth immediately after eating candy, including around brackets and at the gum line. Because even “good” candy can cause cavities!
